Dr. Brad Hinz is a clinical professor with the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Alberta and co-founder of Alberta Retina Consultants. He has previously served as President of the Retina Society of Alberta and was Retina Fellowship Director from 2012 to 2018. Dr. Hinz is an active member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, Canadian Retina Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Originally from Saskatoon, Dr. Hinz completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan. He got married and moved to Edmonton in 1988 to attend medical school at the University of Alberta, where he also completed his residency in ophthalmology. He then pursued a two-year medical and surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1998, Dr. Hinz returned to Edmonton and co-founded Alberta Retina Consultants alongside Dr. Mark Greve. Over the years, he has developed a comprehensive medical and surgical retina practice and has participated in numerous clinical trials. His academic contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
Although Dr. Hinz concluded his intraocular surgical practice in 2024, he remains actively involved in the medical management of retinal and vitreous diseases. He is also deeply committed to medical education, mentoring medical students, residents, and retina fellows.
Outside of his professional work, Dr. Hinz enjoys golf, billiards, and exploring technology—but above all, he treasures time spent with his family.
