Dr. Greve attended and received his Doctor of Medicine in 1983-1988 from the University of Saskatchewan. He then began his Ophthalmology Residency in 1988, at the University of Saskatchewan, completing his Residency in 1992. Dr. Greve spent the next two years, till 1994, completing his Medical/Surgical Retina Fellowship at Louisiana State University.

Some of Dr. Greve’s other accomplishments include Licentiate Medical Council of Canada, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Diplomate for the American Board of Ophthalmology, and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Chad Baker completed a Bachelor’s of Science with First Class Honors in Neuroscience at the University of Alberta followed by his Doctor of Medicine degree with Honors in Research.  He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Alberta followed by a medical and retinal vitreoretinal fellowship in Vancouver, British Columbia.  He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and an associate clinical professor with the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Alberta.

Dr. Baker returned to his hometown of Edmonton in 2009 with his wife and two children to start his retina practice at Alberta Retina Consultants.  Dr. Baker enjoys mountain biking and running through Edmonton’s river valley.  He and his family also enjoy spending time on Vancouver Island where they surf and paddle board together whenever possible.

Dr. Baker has been a key member of the University of Alberta’s Ophthalmology Residency Committee for over 12 years and through this role he is able to train and support new ophthalmologists as they progress through their challenging residency.  Dr. Baker plays an active role in introducing medical students to the field of Ophthalmology and in selecting new residents for the Ophthalmology program.

Dr. Baker is a physician who is dedicated to patient centered care.  He prides himself on spending time with his patients to help them understand their retinal conditions and treatment options.

Dr. Seamone was raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  He completed a 4-year BSc in Biology at Acadia University.  Following his undergraduate, he moved to Calgary where he completed a MSc in Immunology and his Doctor of Medicine as a member of the Leaders in Medicine Program, University of Calgary.  He then completed a 5-year Ophthalmology residency at Dalhousie University.  Dr. Seamone concluded his training by completing a 2-year medical and surgical Vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Alberta, after which he was fortunate to stay in Alberta and join Alberta Retina Consultants.

Dr. Seamone is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Alberta, and serves as the Fellowship Director for the University of Alberta Vitreoretinal Fellowship Program. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.  Dr. Seamone has been comprehensively trained in the management of medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous.  In his down time, Dr. Seamone enjoys travelling, playing his guitar, and most importantly, spending time with his wife and children.

Dr. Brad Hinz is a clinical professor with the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Alberta and co-founder of Alberta Retina Consultants. He has previously served as President of the Retina Society of Alberta and was Retina Fellowship Director from 2012 to 2018. Dr. Hinz is an active member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, Canadian Retina Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

Originally from Saskatoon, Dr. Hinz completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan. He got married and moved to Edmonton in 1988 to attend medical school at the University of Alberta, where he also completed his residency in ophthalmology. He then pursued a two-year medical and surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland.

In 1998, Dr. Hinz returned to Edmonton and co-founded Alberta Retina Consultants alongside Dr. Mark Greve. Over the years, he has developed a comprehensive medical and surgical retina practice and has participated in numerous clinical trials. His academic contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

Although Dr. Hinz concluded his intraocular surgical practice in 2024, he remains actively involved in the medical management of retinal and vitreous diseases. He is also deeply committed to medical education, mentoring medical students, residents, and retina fellows.

Outside of his professional work, Dr. Hinz enjoys golf, billiards, and exploring technology—but above all, he treasures time spent with his family.

Dr. Riz Somani completed a bachelor of science in Chemistry and Biochemistry followed by a Master of Science in Neuroscience at the University of Western Ontario from 1992 to 1997. He then went on to medical school at the University of Toronto from 1997 to 2001. He completed his Ophthalmology residency in 2008 at the University of Alberta, followed by a 2 year vitreo-retinal fellowship at the University of Iowa.

He was fully trained in handling complex retinal detachment, diagnosis and treatment of choroidal tumors, treatment of intermediate and posterior uveitis, managing diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

Dr. Somani is an Associate Clinical Professor with the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta.

Dr. Paul Grewal is a Retina Specialist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon who considers himself fortunate to practice in his hometown of Edmonton. He completed medical school at the University of British Columbia and subsequently Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Alberta, where he served as Chief Resident. He then completed two Retina Fellowships, firstly at Moorfields Eye Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust in London, England and secondly at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Grewal is a dual board-certified Ophthalmologist in both Canada and the United States. Having completed 15-years of post-secondary training, including dedicated Retina training at other institutions of excellence, he has gained expertise in both common and rare medical and surgical retinal disease.

Notable awards include the Eye Foundation of Canada National Scholarship and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Detweiler Travelling Fellowship Grant. He has achieved 50 scientific publications and presentations in academic journals and at national as well as international conferences. Dr. Grewal teaches medical students, residents and fellows at the University of Alberta. Paul is a member of the Canadian Ophthalmology Society, Canadian Retina Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retina Specialists.

Dr. Matthew Tennant is a clinical professor with the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Alberta. He has served as residency training director for the department.  He is the past president of the Retina Society of Alberta, and past vice-president of the Canadian Retina Society.  Dr. Tennant was a representative forum delegate for the Edmonton Zone for the Alberta Medical Association for 6 years.  Most recently Dr. Tennant has worked with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to develop a retina specific area of focused competency, this was approved as of May 2019.  This will provide standardization of fellowship training for all retina specialists who train in Canada.

Dr. Tennant completed medical school at UBC, followed by residency in ophthalmology at the University of Alberta. He completed his vitreoretinal fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia in 2003 and then joined Alberta Retina Consultants. Dr. Tennant’s areas of interest include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, complex retinal detachments, retinopathy of prematurity, uveitis and telemedicine.

Dr. Ehmann was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan.  He completed a 3-year BSc in physiology with great distinction followed by a 4-year Doctor of Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan.  Following medical school, he moved to Edmonton to complete a 5-year ophthalmology residency at the University of Alberta.  After residency Dr. Ehmann completed a 2-year medical and surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.  Dr. Ehmann then returned to Edmonton to join Alberta Retina Consultants.

Dr. Ehmann is extensively trained to manage all medical and surgical diseases of the vitreous and retina.  He is board certified in both Canada and the United States and has published over 25 journal articles as well as 2 book chapters.  He is an Assistant Clinical Professor with the Department of Ophthalmology and he is involved in both mentoring and training medical students, residents and fellows. Dr. Ehmann served as the fellowship director for the University of Alberta retina fellowship from 2017-2020. He also served as the president of the Retina Society of Alberta (RSA) from 2022-2023 and he is the current president of the Eye Physicians and Surgeons Association of Alberta (EPSAA).  Outside of work his interests include spending time with his family at the lake, golf, skiing, windsurfing and classical violin.
