The Physicians at Alberta Retina Consultants are all clinical and surgical educators within the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta. They serve as dedicated teachers to medical students, nurses, resident physicians and clinical fellows.
Our Fellowship Program.
We are proud to offer a comprehensive two-year medical and surgical retina fellowship — the first in Canada to be accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as an Area of Focused Competence (AFC) in Retina.
Our fellowship provides in-depth, hands-on training in the diagnosis and management of complex retinal diseases, preparing the next generation of leaders in retina care.

Dr. Karny Shouchane-Blum
Dr. Karny Shouchane-Blum received her medical degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and completed an esteemed residency in ophthalmology at Rabin Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident and graduated with distinction. During her residency, she developed a strong passion for the field of vitreoretinal diseases. Committed to advancing the field through research, she has contributed to various ophthalmology projects and published several peer-reviewed articles in reputable medical journals. In her free time, Dr. Shouchane-Blum enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Roy, and their two children. She loves family trips, hiking, and long sunny days at the beach.

Dr. Halit Winter
Dr. Halit Winter earned her MD and MPH cum laude from Ben-Gurion University in Israel. She then completed an ophthalmology residency at Assuta Samson Medical Center, in southern Israel, graduating with distinction and receiving the Outstanding Resident Award. During her training, she established the ultrasound clinic, trained fellow residents and students, and participated in outreach programs providing eye care to immobile patients in their homes as well as Holocaust survivors. During residency, Dr. Winter discovered her love for retinal surgery, and continued working in the retinal unit as an attending physician.
Following residency, Dr. Winter pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at the retina and uveitis units at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. There, she led multiple research projects, secured competitive funding including the VRSF and ISPB awards, presented at international conferences, and contributed to peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Winter is married to Dr. Alon Lazarovich, a urologic oncology surgeon, and together they are raising three daughters. Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the arts, cinema and music, as well as outdoor activities such as biking and hiking.

Dr. Shahanaz Ahmed
Dr Shahanaz Ahmed is a UK-trained ophthalmologist who completed her medical degree at Imperial College London, followed by her ophthalmology residency within the Oxford Deanery. During her training, Dr Ahmed developed a passion for retinal conditions, in particular vitreoretinal surgery and retinopathy of prematurity. She has a strong commitment to training and improving patient care. She served for three years on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' Education and Ophthalmologists in Training Group (OTG) committees, whilst also completing an MBA.
Outside of work, she enjoys the theatre, baking, and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Dr. Henrique Ferrer
Born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Dr. Henrique Ferrer earned his medical degree and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), one of the leading and most traditional ophthalmology training programs in Latin America. During his training, he developed a deep interest in vitreoretinal surgery and advanced diagnostics. In addition to his clinical work, he enjoys being involved in medical education and collaborating on initiatives for physician training.
Outside of medicine, he is an avid sports enthusiast. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis and is a dedicated football fan, passionately supporting his home-state team, Cruzeiro.

Dr. Daniel Milad
Coming from Montreal, Dr. Daniel Milad completed his medical degree at Laval University before pursuing ophthalmology residency at the University of Montreal, where he served as Chief Resident. During his training, Dr. Milad developed a strong interest in innovation, particularly at the intersection of retina and artificial intelligence. His research explores how emerging technologies can strengthen vitreoretinal surgical and medical care, with the goal of responsibly translating these tools from concept to clinic within the Canadian healthcare system.
Outside of medicine, soccer remains one of Dr. Milad’s longest-standing passions, shaped by his years playing at the provincial level in his youth. He also enjoys hiking, skiing, and playing the drums.
