Fellowship.

The Physicians at Alberta Retina Consultants are all clinical and surgical educators within the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta. They serve as dedicated teachers to medical students, nurses, resident physicians and clinical fellows.

Our Fellowship Program.

We are proud to offer a comprehensive two-year medical and surgical retina fellowship — the first in Canada to be accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as an Area of Focused Competence (AFC) in Retina.

Our fellowship provides in-depth, hands-on training in the diagnosis and management of complex retinal diseases, preparing the next generation of leaders in retina care.

Our Current Fellows.

Dr. Karny Shouchane-Blum

Dr. Karny Shouchane-Blum received her medical degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and completed an esteemed residency in ophthalmology at Rabin Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident and graduated with distinction. During her residency, she developed a strong passion for the field of vitreoretinal diseases. Committed to advancing the field through research, she has contributed to various ophthalmology projects and published several peer-reviewed articles in reputable medical journals. In her free time, Dr. Shouchane-Blum enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Roy, and their two children. She loves family trips, hiking, and long sunny days at the beach.

Dr. Mathieu Carrière

Born in the province of Quebec, Dr Mathieu Carrière completed two years of CEGEP in Neuro Sciences in his hometown Lac-Saint-Jean (Qc, Canada) before moving to Quebec City to complete his medical degree with a research focus at Laval University. He then pursued his career path in the Laval University’s ophthalmology program, where he served as co-chief resident and discovered his passion for retina and complex ocular surgeries. During training, he loved sharing knowledge and surgical tips with colleagues.
In his spare time, he enjoys riding road and mountain bikes as well as running and exploring the world with his girlfriend Camille, who took two sabbatical years to follow him on this great fellowship journey in Edmonton.

Dr. Halit Winter

Dr. Halit Winter earned her MD and MPH cum laude from Ben-Gurion University in Israel. She then completed an ophthalmology residency at Assuta Samson Medical Center, in southern Israel, graduating with distinction and receiving the Outstanding Resident Award. During her training, she established the ultrasound clinic, trained fellow residents and students, and participated in outreach programs providing eye care to immobile patients in their homes as well as Holocaust survivors. During residency, Dr. Winter discovered her love for retinal surgery, and continued working in the retinal unit as an attending physician.

Following residency, Dr. Winter pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at the retina and uveitis units at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. There, she led multiple research projects, secured competitive funding including the VRSF and ISPB awards, presented at international conferences, and contributed to peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Winter is married to Dr. Alon Lazarovich, a urologic oncology surgeon, and together they are raising three daughters. Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the arts, cinema and music, as well as outdoor activities such as biking and hiking.
